Workshops
Exploring writing skills in small groups
Writing Workshops
The workshops are for small groups of 5 to 8 students. These provide the experience of writing in a focused group of motivated peers. Often groups are of mixed ages—usually 2nd through 5th grades or 4th through 6th or seventh grades (ages are determined by groups of applicants). During the school year, we meet once a week over 8 to 12 weeks for an hour and a half. I offer summer workshops for two hours in the mornings from 10-12. Note that workshops are designed for enrichment and are not remedial.
Workshops Offer:
- an emphasis on the writing process from brainstorming and drafting through revision and editing
- the chance to work at an individuals’ own level and to explore and expand ideas within the structure of the workshop
- chances to explore a variety of genre
- to listen and respond to others’ writing in a positive and constructive way either in the whole group or in pairs (reading one’s writing to the group is not mandatory but encouraged)
- to finish one piece of writing and make a collective anthology
- confer with students individually
